Dentist warns against overzealous brushing

A dental expert has warned people against brushing their teeth too hard. Whilst a minimum twice-daily cleanse is always recommended, some people may be brushing too vigorously, and thus exposing their teeth to lasting harm.

Dr Jas Sagoo, a leading cosmetic dentist, says it all comes down to applying the right technique to ensure your teeth and gums aren’t damaged. Brushing too hard might erode the outer white enamel layer. As a result, this can expose the inner dentin layer, which has a yellower tone, and change a tooth’s appearance. This advice has been endorsed by the Oral Health Foundation. It says if you noticed extra sensitivity that might be the result of overly aggressive brushing which can lead to receding gums.

So what is the best brushing method? Many dentists recommend tilting your brush at a 45-degree angle. You should proceed with gentle strokes, tooth by tooth to ensure the entire surface area is covered. This procedure should avoid any kind of sawing motion. You should pay particular attention to the gumline to identify and release any trapped food particles.

This can be achieved with either an electric or soft-bristled manual brush to deliver optimal results. In either instance, you shouldn’t apply excessive pressure on your teeth. Dentists recommend you replace your toothbrush every 12 weeks or sooner if there is noticeable evidence of fraying.

The Oral Health Foundation recommends an advanced electric toothbrush with pressure sensors. These are designed to warn you if your brushing technique is too robust. If you are in Chester and need a dentist, call us now at Art of Dental Care.
