Early signs of mouth cancer
Mouth cancer, also known as oral cancer, can affect areas including the gums, tongue, lips and cheeks. A leading dentist, Dr Deepa Chopra, said that there are ways in which you identify signs without even opening your mouth.
Her advice follows the Oral Health Foundation State of Mouth 2024 report, which highlighted a 38% rise in new UK cases of mouth cancer over the previous decade. In that year, 3,637 people died from the disease. As with most cancers, survival rates depend on unique personal circumstances and how early it is caught.
Dr Chopra said that people can improve their own understanding by looking out for different symptoms. Some evidence may be found during a professional dental examination, but other signs may be less obvious. Many symptoms occur inside the mouth, and these include unexplained bleeding, strange lumps, red or white patches, loose teeth or ulcers that do not heal.
Elsewhere, people might encounter issues swallowing, persistent sore throats, earache and chewing issues or jaw numbness. Others might experience hoarseness or unsettling changes to their speech patterns. In each instance, the issue might develop gradually and initially get mistaken for something else. Bleeding, for instance, may be an indicator of gum disease.
Following a healthy lifestyle in terms of alcohol, cigarette and UV light consumption is important, and being able to identify problematic symptoms at an early stage is vital. This is why you should always seek professional medical opinion if in doubt.
