Effective alternative to mouthwash revealed
Many people instinctively reach for mouthwash for a quick rinse, but is it the smartest option?
Sometimes, it is not necessary to purchase expensive branded products when a far cheaper but equally effective alternative is right under our noses and in our cupboards.
A saltwater rinse can be just as useful at fighting bacteria. This tried and tested approach has been applied for generations and works by creating a hostile environment that bacteria struggle to cope with. It achieves this by drawing fluids out of inflamed tissues. This serves to calm irritation, reduce swelling and aid the natural healing process.
A saltwater rinse is often recommended after a gum flare-up, mouth ulcer or more general soreness. It will gently cleanse the mouth without filling it with harsh chemicals, alcohol, strong antiseptics or artificial flavourings. It works by removing debris, reducing bacteria and soothing tender areas. As a result, the mouth won’t feel as dry or irritated.
Salt water is not just beneficial for gums – it is also proven to boost immune systems, soothing sore throats and helping people with upper respiratory infections, all for the price of a few pennies.
While a daily gargle is recommended, it shouldn’t be overdone. Too much salt can irritate gums, and it should never be used as a substitute for standard brushing or flossing.
