Hollywood actress reveals how vaping ruined her teeth

Hollywood star Lily James recently described how vaping permanently damaged her teeth.

In an interview, she said that her addiction to e-cigarettes had forced her to undergo dental work. Flavoured vapes are full of harmful sugar, and James required fillings as a consequence of her addictive vaping habit.

How harmful is vaping in general?

Owing to a lack of studies so far, the scientific community is still assessing the impact of vapes. The British Dental Association has said that limited evidence has thus far indicated potential links with dry mouths, gum disease and irritation.

One study by Newcastle University found that people who vape experienced slightly more exposure to gum disease and plaque than those who did not, but researchers stressed that the difference was ‘marginal’.

Similarly with caries, studies on US dental patients, conducted between 2019 and 2022, found that those who vaped were at greater risk than those who did not. Some scientists have cautioned that it is simply too early to extrapolate firm conclusions.

While some vape users may be more susceptible to tooth decay, many former smokers have been found to eat more sugary food. If vaping is a contributor to tooth decay, it could be connected to dry mouths cutting off essential saliva supplies to fend off bacteria. Vape liquids contain water retaining properties, and the calcium and phosphate in saliva is necessary to protect mouths from, say, citrus acids.
