General Dental Council registered Specialist in Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Restorative and Endodontics
Having completed both a standard undergraduate degree in dentistry (1998) and a General Dental Council approved 5 year specialist training pathway (2012), Gareth is one of a very small number of UK clinicians who are able to call themselves a specialist in multiple dental disciplines. He has been a registered dentist for over 25 years, and, alongside this role, he also works as an NHS Consultant in Restorative Dentistry and has done so for the last 13 years in both general and teaching hospitals throughout the UK.
His interest in postgraduate training included a 5 year PhD in Periodontology before he embarked on a specialist training programme. During his PhD he developed an interest in links between gum disease and bodily health, in particular the effect of diet and nutrition on gums which influences the holistic, patient-centred approach he takes to treatment and when supporting patients to manage their gum condition. He won a national British Society of Periodontology award for this research in 2002. He has taught both undergraduate and postgraduate dentists, and is currently an external examiner for the Diploma in Dental Hygiene, University College Cork. Gareth’s own clinical training has also extended to more specific aspects of gum treatment including regeneration, ‘gummy smile’ management and gum recession management through courses in Italy.
His current hospital work is predominantly based around the oral management and rehabilitation of patients requiring complex care following cancer diagnoses, patients whose teeth are missing through inherited characteristics or through severe trauma and patients with jaw joint problems.
Gareth’s more recent continuing professional development has included completion of a year long certificate course with the British Academy of Implant and Restorative Dentistry on which he now teaches, and composite (white filling) courses. He is a certified SCi Practitioner for bruxism management and a Bioclear Practitioner, having been taught at the only UK Bioclear Learning Centre.
Gareth also examines for the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) and has recently been accepted as an examiner for the new Intercollegiate Dental Specialty Fellowship Examination in Prosthodontics.
In his spare time, Gareth enjoys cooking, gardening and spending time with his wife and daughter.
