Overlooked reason for bleeding gums explored
Mouth bleeding is usually attributed to gum disease or poor cleaning methods, but there could be another factor at play.
While bleeding is often the result of infections, excessive brushing or inadequate dental hygiene, one YouTuber claims there could be another cause.
Dr Eric Berg, a health influencer with a big social media following on platforms such as TikTok, recently claimed that it could also be an indicator of a lack of suitable vitamins. In a viral video, he said that bleeding gums suggested a “classic vitamin C deficiency”.
Our bodies use the nutrient Vitamin C, also referred to as ascorbic acid, to preserve healthy tissues while strengthening the immune system.
It is vital for protecting cells, keeping skin healthy and for helping wounds heal. It is used to produce the protein collagen, which bolsters skin, gums and blood vessels. Research has found that collagen cannot work effectively without the right amount of vitamin C, and this can result in fragile and sensitive gums, or even a condition such as scurvy.
Our bodies are not able to store vitamin C, which means you should look to ingest around 75 to 90 milligrams every day, ideally naturally, via fruits and vegetables such as oranges, peppers, strawberries and tomatoes. Dentists have warned that incidences of bleeding gums should not be ignored.
