Survey reveals shocking statistic in people using mouthwash over brushing

Some startling new data has been published, offering a glimpse into people’s oral hygiene habits.

The research, commissioned by Philips Sonicare, revealed a worrying level of public ignorance about how to best look after their teeth and gums.

The poll of 2,000 adults found that a large number choose to cut corners at the wash basin. Of those questioned, 41% of people only brushed once a day, while 45% never flossed. Another 11% admitted they had never cleaned their teeth interdentally, whether with floss or another means.

Additionally, around a fifth of people opted to use mouthwash instead of brushing, while 18% indicated they brushed for less than the recommended two minutes, and 12% admitted to using a finger instead of a brush. Excuses cited included laziness, a lack of time and not feeling well.

One dentist, Nilesh Parmar, said that people significantly overestimate how much time they spend brushing. He advises people to use electric brushes with in-built timers or listen to songs that last two minutes to help track time. Dental professionals have advised people in these categories to take their dental health more seriously, because failure to act now could lead to serious health implications in later life, which may be something they only realise after it is too late.

In the short term, it could complicate everything from romantic relationships to job interviews – both concerns expressed by a high percentage of respondents.
