The hidden health indicators behind tooth discolouration
Tooth discolouration is often the product of unhealthy lifestyle choices, but what are the main symptoms and how seriously should you take it?
Teeth colour is a common indicator of the state of your dental health. Having ‘pearly whites’ isn’t just an aesthetic confidence booster but also evidence of healthy teeth. If you experience unexpected colouration, this could point to an underlying health problem.
Leading Mumbai-based oral medicine specialist Dr Bipin Upadhyay says that discolouration can indicate a number of different medical conditions. If a tooth changes colour and acquires a darker appearance, this could be a sign of decay or a dead nerve. A grey tooth might be the result of the tooth’s inner pulp losing its blood supply, while yellowing may be due to lifestyle choices.
Tooth discolouration has been linked to harmful medical conditions. These include liver disease, diabetes, genetic disorders, chronic infections and eating disorders. Usually though, it is the product of dietary habits that cause staining. Smoking, soft drinks, excessive tea or coffee consumption, an absence of proper brushing and missed dental check-ups are the most common ones.
If the cause of discolouration is unknown, is it better to see a doctor or a dentist?
Dr Upadhyay says you should see a dentist in the first instance, particularly as most cases are a consequence of diet, smoking or oral health neglect.
