Water fluoridation described as safe by independent review
A new review by the Academy of Medical Sciences has concluded that water fluoridation continues to be safe for people across the UK.
The British Fluoridation Society (BFS) has welcomed the report, as the evidence presented indicates that it delivers unmistakable oral health benefits without causing any harm.
The study titled ‘Evidence synthesis report on the optimal concentration of water fluoridation in the UK’ has been described as the most detailed and thorough assessment of water fluoridation ever undertaken. It found that current UK levels of fluoridation reduce incidences of tooth decay in people of all ages, while minimising the need for intrusive dental surgery. No evidence was presented of any negative impact on intelligence, neurodevelopment or any other non-dental medical conditions.
Where studies have identified possible harm elsewhere, such as dental fluorosis, the fluoride levels were significantly greater than those commonly applied in the UK. Risk assessments found that where mild fluorosis has occurred, it is chiefly cosmetic and not materially harmful at existing concentrations.
The news will reassure British policymakers that water fluoridation is a secure and efficient approach that safeguards public health, within the parameters of established safety limits. The chairman of the BFS, Barry Cockroft, said the report vindicated water fluoridation as a proven method of tackling oral health inequalities in the UK.
