What did we learn from National Smile Month?

National Smile Month 2025 has now concluded, with this year’s ‘Feed Your Smile’ theme being the link between diet and oral health.

The high-profile oral health awareness campaign ran from mid-May to mid-June, and featured contributions from a host of different speakers pioneering oral health efforts both in the UK and worldwide.

Its chief aim is to bring the dental profession, sponsors and community partners together in a joint effort to promote improved oral health. According to Chief Executive Dr Nigel Carter OBE, the campaign goes way beyond raising awareness and is as much about working together with the general public in local communities.

Reflecting on when the campaign started back in Birmingham in 1977, Dr Carter noted how far we have come from the time where losing most of your teeth by middle age was the norm. The UK has since made huge strides, in part thanks to improved public education and innovations such as fluoride toothpaste.

He drew attention to global success stories such as the Oral Health Foundation’s educational projects in Vietnam and support for the oral health strategy pursued by the World Health Organisation in Europe. However, he counselled against complacency, given the threats posed to teeth and oral health by harmful diets. Furthermore, he highlighted the issues around unhealthy baby foods that can instil a taste for teeth-damaging sugary snacks from an early age.

Next year will mark the Golden Anniversary – 50th Edition of National Smile Month.
