Why ‘Turkey Teeth’ can be dangerous to your wallet AND your health
Are you in search of a dazzling smile? After that perfect Love Island look?
The chances are you will have heard about cheap dental treatment in Turkey – but is it all as it seems?
Many Brits fly there each year in the hope of returning with ‘pearly white’ teeth, but the evidence suggests that some people will come back anything but smiling. One woman’s experiences, in particular, may cause you to exercise caution.
In 2023, Wrexham-based Marsha Thomas had 26 crowns and seven implants installed in Turkey, in a bid to achieve a winning smile. She spent £8,000 on the surgery, but now claims it was botched, and that her teeth are loose and ill-fitting. A subsequent check in the UK identified infections because the crowns were incorrectly fitted, with food getting lodged beneath them.
Thomas now says she is unable to bite food properly and that she is in continual pain, with face and lip swelling as well as mouth and throat infections.
Returning to an Istanbul clinic, on the basis corrective surgery would cost her £3,640, she was shocked to be told by Turkish dentists that her teeth were so degraded, her bill would actually set her back £15,000. This was after being assured her teeth were protected by guarantee for 10 years.
