Are young people turning away from ‘Turkey teeth’?

In recent years, Turkey has been a popular destination for cosmetic dental treatments – but are there now signs of a backlash?

A recent episode of the popular TV show ‘Love Island’ generated publicity because some contestants had more natural looks. Eagle-eyed viewers noticed that some of the cast looked more natural and had clearly had teeth braces.

In part thanks to social media influencers, Turkey has become so synonymous with dental tourism in recent years that ‘Turkey teeth’ has entered the lexicon. The appeal has mainly been based on cosmetic procedures that were cheaper than in the UK. However, according to leading dental professional Dr Laura McGrath, many young people are now looking at alternative aesthetics. She added that the renewed popularity of more natural looking teeth reflects a taste for less invasive Invisalign or whitening solutions.

Commenting on the programme, Dr McGrath observed that many young people are becoming more clued up about the long-term implications of such trips. Unregulated dental surgery might incur a lower cost but, equally, could end up requiring corrective follow-up work every few years. A quick, cheap fix could easily turn into a false economy and pose serious dangers to a person’s looks and health.

To protect your teeth, dentists generally recommend less drastic treatment options such as teeth straightening, whitening or composite bonding.
