Holiday teeth whitening: what you need to know

Holiday teeth whitening: what you need to know

Many people going away on holiday will want to ensure they have a beautiful smile on their travels – and online retailers have been reporting brisk business in teeth whitening brands.

But are they safe as DIY products – or should you see a professional?

Teeth whitening products such as MySweetSmile and the Smile Therapy Teeth Whitening Pen are designed for easy whitening on-the-go. They are used to delicately eliminate food and drink stains, and offer the advantage of not containing harsh peroxides. However, before rushing to purchase them, it is worth exercising caution. Some dental professionals are now arguing that at-home solutions might not be the best route to achieve perfect teeth.

According to Dr Sam Jethwa of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, hydrogen peroxide is needed to whiten teeth in the longer term. However, given the sensitivity of teeth, over the counter DIY products are rarely strong enough, with a limit on how much hydrogen peroxide they can contain. Moreover, whitening strips, pens and powders could leave an uneven finish; while there are additional risks associated with buying less regulated international products, which could be dangerous to teeth and gums.

Professional dentists, conversely, are equipped to provide patients with a whitening tray, which is moulded to accommodate different tooth shapes. Patients are thus able to determine where the gel should be applied. Results can be ready within a fortnight, with patients safe in the knowledge their teeth were suitable for professional treatment.
