Popular diet thought to reduce gum disease
The Mediterranean diet is well-known for being healthy. It has long been associated with reducing the chances of Alzheimer’s disease, poor mental health or early death.
Now, a new study has found that it could result in improved gum health too. The research was published in the Journal of Periodontology. It was conducted jointly by teams at King’s College London and in Italy at the University of Catania. A total of 195 participants took part.
The sample group was asked about its dietary habits. The study found that those who followed the Mediterranean diet were less likely to have gum disease. It is generally rich in fruit, vegetables and whole grains over excessive dairy, red meat or processed foods. This healthier diet is less likely to cause inflammatory indicators in the blood.
A leading periodontist on the project, Giuseppe Mainas, said that a balanced Mediterranean-style diet had the potential to reduce gum disease and related systemic inflammation. The research team observed that compounds in plant-derived food work to reduce inflammation, in contrast with red meat.
Serious gum disease is in large part caused by a build-up of plaque, while the body’s immune system is also a factor. The researchers concluded that there might be a connection between diet, inflammation and periodontal disease. It is hoped the research will help educate people about the link between good consumption and gum disease.
