Five common foods and drinks that are quietly ruining teeth

A leading dentist recently suggested that many underestimate the dental damage caused by certain foods and drinks.

Dr Deepa Chopra has therefore issued advice on five items that could erode your enamel and cultivate bacteria. Based off of these findings, what should you aim to reduce or cut out altogether?

It is well-known that sweets are damaging, because sugar is harmful to the enamel that protects our teeth. Similarly, energy drinks contain high sugar and acid content that is punishing on sensitive gums. This can result in cavities and eventual tooth decay. If you must consume these drinks, she recommends the use of a straw and a rinse with water afterwards. Dark chocolate is a better alternative to sugary foods, but only in moderation.

Switching to savouries, however, is not much better. The starch in crisps can feed plaque, and it is not necessarily washed away by saliva.

Fruits such as orange juice may seem like a healthier alternative, but they are also filled with natural sugar. The acidity in fruit juice means it can damage enamel if consumed continually through the day. Chopra advises people to stick to water in between meals.

The other threat to oral health is posed by processed ready meals. These are softer to chew and can obstruct children’s natural jaw development, leading to future dental complications.

Restricting or eliminating these foods and drinks altogether in the kitchen can help fend off longer term harm to teeth and oral health.
