Unexpected drinks that could stain your teeth exposed

Everyone knows that coffee and wine stain your teeth, but there are other drinks that aren’t faultless either.

A leading pharmacist at Chemist4U has said that some cocktails could also ruin your smile. Ian Budd explained that popular drinks such as Aperol Spritz can result in long-term discolouration due to a damaging mix of bright pigments, acidity and carbonisation. The effect of this is to soften tooth enamel and cause stains when the beverage clings to it.

Other drinks to watch out for include dark stouts like pints of Guinness. When these beverages are consumed regularly over time, they can cause yellowing or dulling of teeth due to tannins, which are responsible for enamel staining.

Otherwise, healthy fruits such as cherries, blackberries and blueberries are made up of natural pigments that can cause teeth discolouration. This also applies to berry smoothies.

Other discolouring foods to be aware of include balsamic vinegar, tomato-based sauces, and curry and turmeric-heavy dishes.

People may be wondering how they can enjoy a night out with their favourite tipple or food without staining their teeth. The answer lies in following a few simple steps, such as drinking water immediately afterwards, in addition to an effective brushing routine, which applies first thing in the morning and just before bed. Using whitening fluoride toothpaste in conjunction with routine dental check-ups can also help.

Other top tips include drinking through straws, regular flossing and chewing sugar-free gum to increase saliva and wash away acid.
