Research suggests dental benefits of cheese
Dental professionals in the US have long championed the health benefits of a good cheese. Whenever you eat the right cheese, your tooth enamel is boosted by its core mineral: calcium.
But which are the best cheeses for their oral health enhancing properties?
Not all cheeses are equal
Aged cheeses are rich in calcium, which can boost the protective outer layer of the teeth. In contrast, processed cheeses should be avoided, because they contain preservatives and added sugars that can be damaging to enamel.
Swiss cheeses, blue cheeses, Gorgonzola and Monterrey Jack have been praised for offering unique ways of strengthening teeth. They contain phosphorus which, together with calcium, can work to replace minerals lost due to other ingested food.
Cheddar, additionally, contains a protein called casein, also found in milk, which has been found to strengthen enamel and prevent cavities and excessive sensitivity. It achieves this by leaving a film over teeth that can ward off harmful acids.
Cheddar also stimulates saliva, which is a necessary defence against damaging sugar, acid and bacteria. A 2024 study published by the US-based Academy of General Dentistry found that Ph levels were elevated for 30 minutes following cheddar cheese consumption, surpassing milk and yoghurt.
While a daily slice of cheese is recommended, it is important not to overdo it. The calorie intake means excessive consumption could lead to other health problems in the future. Similarly, combining cheese with wine or crackers might undo the good work keeping malevolent acids at bay.
