What is ICON?

ICON is a very minimally invasive treatment that works mainly by infiltrating porous areas within the enamel with a special liquid resin.

White spots look different because the affected enamel reflects light differently compared to healthy enamel. By infiltrating these microscopic spaces, ICON can reduce this contrast and help the affected area to blend more naturally with the surrounding tooth. The main aim is to preserve the natural tooth rather than masking it.

What does the evidence tell us?

Research supports resin infiltration as an effective option for improving the appearance of appropriately selected white spot lesions.

A systematic review and meta-analysis study found that resin infiltration produced significantly greater cosmetic improvement in white spot lesions than having no treatment or having fluoride varnish, although the authors also highlighted the need for further high-quality long-term research.

More recent evidence shows white spots associated with orthodontic treatment have better aesthetic outcomes with ICON resin infiltration when compared with fluoride varnish.

For mild to moderate dental fluorosis, recent systematic review evidence suggests resin infiltration can also provide effective masking of the affected enamel.
